Microsoft Dynamics 365 is a suite of ERP and CRM applications covering financials, supply chain, sales, customer service, and human resources, integrated with Microsoft 365, Power BI, and Azure.
Firms encounter it at clients that have standardised on Microsoft and want their financial system inside the same estate. The practical advantages are real: shared identity and access management, native Excel and Outlook integration, and reporting built in Power BI, which finance teams generally already know.
The firm’s contribution is usually structural rather than technical. Implementation partners configure the system, but the chart of accounts, dimension design, and close process determine whether the resulting reporting is useful — and those are accounting decisions that go wrong when left to a systems integrator alone.
The finance modules cover general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, budgeting, fixed assets, and multi-entity consolidation with currency handling and inter-company transactions.
Operational modules span supply chain, project operations, field service, and manufacturing, licensed separately so clients deploy only what they need. CRM applications cover sales, marketing, and customer service on the same data platform.
Power BI provides reporting and dashboards, and Power Automate handles workflow automation across Dynamics and the wider Microsoft estate.
Mid-market and enterprise organisations already committed to Microsoft, where ecosystem alignment outweighs the ERP-specific advantages competitors offer.
NetSuite is the main alternative for enterprise clients and generally has deeper ERP functionality and a larger partner network. Sage Intacct is stronger on financial reporting and consolidation, and Acumatica offers consumption-based licensing for clients with many occasional users.
