TurboTax is Intuit’s consumer-facing tax preparation software for individuals and small business owners. It uses a guided interview format to walk users through federal and state returns, with automatic import from W-2s, 1099s, and financial institutions.

TurboTax is not a professional tax tool — it is designed for self-filers. However, it appears in the accounting firm context because some firms recommend it to clients with simple returns (single W-2, standard deduction) who do not need professional preparation. This lets firms focus their capacity on more complex engagements.

The software supports individual returns across all tiers (Free, Deluxe, Premier, Self-Employed) and small business returns through TurboTax Business. It includes error-checking, audit risk flagging, and live support options. Firms that prepare returns on behalf of clients use Intuit’s professional products (Lacerte, ProSeries, or ProConnect Tax Online) rather than TurboTax.
