AutoEntry is a data extraction tool that captures information from receipts, invoices, bank statements, and bills using OCR, categorises the output, and publishes it to accounting software. It is owned by Sage and continues to operate as a standalone product supporting non-Sage ledgers.
Firms deploy it to remove manual keying across a client base, with documents arriving by client photo, email forwarding, or bulk upload. Extracted details — date, amount, supplier, VAT or sales tax — are reviewed and then posted to the connected ledger.
Credit-based pricing shapes how firms use it. Because cost follows documents processed rather than a per-client subscription, it works well across a book with uneven activity: a dormant client costs nothing, while a busy one consumes proportionally. Firms often reserve line-item extraction for the clients that genuinely need it and use cheaper header-only capture elsewhere.
Capture covers purchase and sales invoices, receipts, and bank statements, with multi-page documents split automatically. Supplier rules remember coding decisions so recurring vendors post consistently without re-coding each time.
Line-item extraction is available where detail below the invoice total is needed — quantities, descriptions, and per-row values for stock or job costing. Bank statement conversion turns PDF statements into structured data for import where a feed is unavailable.
Published entries retain the source image against the transaction, keeping the audit trail intact in the ledger.
Firms handling bookkeeping for clients producing high volumes of paper documents, and particularly practices with a Sage-weighted client base where the integration runs deepest.
Dext is the main competitor and generally stronger on supplier rules and client experience. Hubdoc is effectively free for Xero firms and better at fetching recurring statements automatically. Datamolino competes specifically on line-item extraction.
